Physical Education

The PE department at Parkside is a thriving and vibrant department, which seeks to inspire pupils to be aspirational, participate widely and embrace opportunities. Pupils participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. They are exposed to competition within sport which develops values and discipline to benefit them within sport and all other aspects of life. We encourage them to lead healthy, active lifestyles through lifelong participation in sport and physical activity, allowing them to become socially and emotionally aware, confident young people. Every pupil at Parkside participates in sport, regardless of their individual needs and we are proud of our inclusive approach.

PE at Parkside provides both stimulating and challenging learning through a range of sports including Invasion games, Net and Wall games, Striking and Fielding, and Athletics. Led by subject specialists, our pupils are inspired to try new sports. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons per week, rotating through a specific timetable of sports in line with the other Spire Trust Learning Partnership schools. The vast extra-curricular offering is linked to the curriculum and allows pupils to represent Parkside Middle School in competitive situations. We also offer a ‘Stay and Play’ extra-curricular option to ensure that all pupils have access to sport clubs, regardless of whether they wish to participate competitively in the school teams. Physical Education at Parkside teaches the values of sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, resilience and honesty; we encourage lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

At Parkside, in the PE department, we aim to promote enjoyment and engagement in sport and physical activity as we recognise the benefits that it can have on physical, social, and mental health. This is shown through the numbers of pupils attending afterschool clubs and representing the school in competitive fixtures. This impact is also reflected through pupils’ attitudes towards PE and school sport. Through creating links with local sports clubs, we feel that we can encourage lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
